Oktoberfest 2021
Despite the rainy start, Oktoberfest 2021 was successfully held all day
In the 40 years St. Patrick School and Church has been hosting the Oktoberfest, it has always been held on a Sunday, but this year, Oktoberfest was on a Saturday. Why?
“Changing Oktoberfest to a Saturday event was well received by most. This allowed us to extend the hours and create a fun, family event that was enjoyed by all,” says Kelly Hohe, chair of this year’s event.
Another change to this year’s Oktoberfest was the change of entree, from chicken to fish. “We wanted to try something different than years past. We know how everyone loves the Lenten fish fries and received feedback from parishioners and the community about changing up the menu.”
Another new attraction, run by the Student Council at St. Patrick School (STUCO), was the dunk tank. Many STUCO members were dunked throughout the day. Other highlights included numerous class games such as bouncy houses, musical chairs, crazy driver, duck pond, and grab bags.
When asked to compare to past Oktoberfests, Hohe said, “We really tried to change things up compared to previous Oktoberfests. We wanted it to feel like a more traditional Oktoberfest that you see in surrounding communities with growth potential. The biggest change was it being held on a Saturday and extending the event time frame. In doing so, we were able host a full lineup entertainment including The Shamrock Irish Dancers, The World’s Finest German Band, Ozark Spirit Cloggers, Trilogy, and Alter-K-Shon. Throughout the day the crowd was steady but I know the morning weather and the current pandemic kept people away.”
According to Hohe, she had several reasons to become the chair. “Besides being asked… there was a need for someone to take over Oktoberfest and both Sarah Noellsch and I decided this would be a great opportunity for us to help. Being new to Rolla, St. Patrick Church, and the school, it was a great way to make a positive impact. Plus it’s important for me to show my kids how fulfilling volunteering can be and how it is truly one of the greatest gifts that we can give others.”
