About
Welcome to The Emerald Press, the official online newspaper of St. Patrick School!
The Emerald Press is designed and published by the 8th Grade class through the Media Studies department.
Media Studies adds a new dimension to our English/Language Arts curriculum, utilizing our writing, essay, poetry, reading, and language arts skills by applying them to a variety of media, including paper and digital publications.
In Media Studies, students get direct experience in researching, interviewing, writing, editing, design, graphics, photography, and online publishing. We also discuss the online user experience, the back-end development of online communication through platforms like WordPress, and the use of style guides for consistent communication across our publications (Oxford comma for life!).
At St. Patrick’s, one goal is to create curriculum and classrooms that educate, inspire, and serve. The Emerald Press staff hopes we have done the same for our readers.
“From journalism I learned to write under pressure, to work with deadlines, to have limited space and time, to conduct an interview, to find information, to research, and, above all, to use language as efficiently as possible and remember, always, that there is a reader out there.”
~Isabel Allende
“Journalism is about bringing people to an event or something they couldn’t attend.”
~Chris Milk
“My only advice is follow your dream and do whatever you like to do most. I chose journalism because I wanted to be in the places where history was being made.”
~Jorge Ramos
