Hello again, this article is part two to my previous article please go look at it. We will be talking about abilities, hidden abilities, base stats, and IVs/ EVs. Let’s start with abilities.
Abilities
Now, there is a thing in Pokemon called abilities. Abilities can do a wide variety of things from raising your attack to making it rain. Each activating with different conditions. For example, let’s use Pikachu. Pikachu has the ability Static. If a Pokemon hits Pikachu with a contact move (anything that “touches” the target) they become paralyzed. Another example is Incineroar who has the ability Blaze. Blaze increases all fire type moves Incineroar uses if he is at half or below HP.
Hidden abilities
Hidden abilities are bonus abilities a Pokemon can have. For example Pikachu has the hidden ability Lightning Rod. If a Pokemon hits Pikachu with an electric type move it will be absorbed doing no damage and healing Pikachu. Hidden abilities are usually better than their normal abilities. Although in some cases it’s not. Take Durant for example it has the ability Swarm or Hustle. Swarm boosts bug type moves power when hp is low, and Hustle Boosts the Pokémon’s Attack stat but lowers its accuracy. Now Durant’s hidden ability is Truant, the WORST ability in the game. Truant makes the pokemon not move every other turn. Truant is so bad that the strategy with it is to just give it to another Pokemon.
Base stats
Base stats are the stats of a Pokemon, their attack, defense, etc. Let’s use Pikachu again. Pikachu has a base stat total of 320. Pikachu has 35 HP, 55 Attack, 40 Defence, 50 Sp(Special) Attack, 50 Sp Defence, Speed 90. Of course stats can increase depending on level, that’s where IVs and EVs come in.
IVs and EVs
IVs (Individual Values) the hidden numbers which dictate why one Pokémon has better or worse stats than another of the same species. So why one Pikachu, for example, could be faster than another. EVs (Effort Values) another hidden number which dictates a Pokémon’s final stats. IVs and EVs can be given to a Pokemon.Ivs are given by defeating certain pokemon to give you certain stats for example. When you defeat a Blissey it will give you 3hp points. You can use items to increase your Evs. HP Up (HP), Protein (Attack), Iron (Defense), Calcium (Sp. Attack), Zinc (Sp. Defense), Carbos (Speed). These are all items that can increase your Evs.
That’s it! I will continue to make more articles and go deeper into Pokemon VGC!
