Hello everyone, it’s me Logan and I’m here with the first actual story of my column. This week I’m doing a ¨Who Would Win?¨ edition. I’m even adding a poll so you can vote for who would win.
The two vehicles competing this week are the Nagato, a famous Japanese battleship during World War 2, and the one and only, USS Tennessee. These two ships have survived some of the worst naval battles in history and have earned their spot in this competition. First, I will tell you a bit about these ships and what they accomplished, then we will move on to who would win in a 1 versus 1.
USS Tennessee
The USS Tennessee is a super-dreadnought battleship built for the US Navy shortly after World War 1. She was launched on April 30, 1919 at the New York Naval Shipyard in New York City. She was armed with four turrets of three 14 inch guns. One of those shells weighs over 1,000 pounds and is equivalent to launching a school bus at the speed of sound, AND THERE ARE 12 OF THEM! The USS Tennessee was stationed in Pearl Harbor on Battleship Row during the Attack of Pearl Harbor. She survived the attack, but was heavily damaged. She soon was repaired and returned to service in February of 1942. After she was repaired, she steamed to San Francisco alongside the USS West Virginia and the USS Colorado. They were ordered to Task Force 1 to guard the East Coast of the US. After that, they went on a few training missions for the task force then, after the war ended, she was decommissioned in 1947 and was scrapped in 1959.
Nagato
The Nagato is a super-dreadnought battleship for the Imperial Japanese Navy. She was launched on November 9, 1919. She served in the Second Sino-Japanese war and was the flagship of Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto during the Attack of Pearl Harbor. She participated in the Battle of Midway but, never saw combat. She was armed with four turrets of two 16 inch guns. That’s some ridiculous firepower with eight 1500 pound shells! She also had eight 533 mm torpedo tubes. The Nagato never saw action until the Battle of the Philippine Sea in 1944. The Nagato, Yamato, and the Fuso were in a strike force headed toward Leyte Gulf and encountered a small American Navy force called Taffy 3, consisting of six small escort carriers, three destroyers, and four destroyer escorts. The Japanese were overwhelming compared to the Americans. During the battle, the Nagato claimed to have damaged a destroyer escort but that’s it. After the battle, she did not see much action for the rest of the war and was scrapped in 1947.
Anyway, that’s a little about the two ships. Now that you have read about these ships, please go to the poll below and let me know who you think would win.
